- Assessing
Fitness to Drive - In September 2003, new medical standards
were released for drivers of private and commercial vehicles. The
standards are contained in the document Assessing Fitness to
Drive 2003, which replaces the previous private vehicle driver
standards (Assessing Fitness to Drive 2001) and the commercial
vehicle driver standards (Medical Examinations for Commercial
Vehicle Drivers 1997). Commercial Vehicles
include: (1) those which are physically difficult to drive and/or
require the capacity to monitor many vehicle functions, e.g.
heavy rigid vehicles and articulated vehicles; (2) those for
which the consequences of a crash are usually serious, e.g. buses
and dangerous goods vehicles; and (3) those for which the public
expect a high standard of fitness, e.g. taxis and ambulances.
